This is going to be special, it really is.
Women’s football has come on leaps and bounds in terms of popularity and interest over the last few years, and the 2019 Women’s World Cup is going to be a fitting way to end a decade of magnificent progress and headway. And what a place for it all to happen, in the backyard of the best league in Europe, France.
Though USA still hold on a tight grip on the women’s game in terms of quality and popularity, Europe is catching up rapidly and the burgeoning intrigue regarding the Women’s Champions League is clear evidence of that.
Since the tournament was rebranded in 2009 from the UEFA Women’s Cup to UEFA Women’s Champions League, the number of countries entering has risen year on year while attendances have soared astronomically. For example, before 2009, only four of the 15 final games were played in front of more than 10,000 people. Since then, every single one has attracted more than 10,000 with a record 50,000 people flocking to see Lyon beat Frankfurt at the Olympiastadion in Munich in 2012.
That game was, until March earlier this year, the highest attendance ever for a women’s club match, but it was beaten by Atletico Madrid who attracted over 60,000 people to their La Liga game against Barcelona.
The overall record though, belongs to the USA and was at the Women’s World Cup back in 1999 when over 90,000 people watched USA claim their second title by beating China 5-4 on penalties in the final.
It’s no surprise that America hold the record, really. Women’s football almost receives complete parity in the US compared to its male counterparts, which can’t be said for many countries around the world, and the vigour and respect the women’s players are given in America is second to none – the viewing parties up and down America for the 2015 World Cup was a sight to behold.
But, they’re not outright favourites this year heading into the tournament, they’re actually tied level at 3/1 alongside France with Betfred. Germany are in next at 6/1 with 888 Sport, then it’s England at 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
There’s a whole load more too. And you can find all the bookmakers offering the best 2019 Women’s World Cup betting odds in that table below.
