The ATP Finals always feels like tennis’ fifth major of the year. Played in the scintillatingly-blue, cathedral-like O2 Arena, the whole tournament has developed something of an aura since arriving in London back in 2009.
Roger Federer (6 titles) and Novak Djokovic (5 titles) between them have won 11 of the last 15 tournaments, but the last two have been won by a couple of new faces in Gregor Dimitrov and Andy Murray.
Both won’t be winning this year’s edition, though. Andy Murray’s near-year injury layoff has left him dangling down at 250 odd in the world rankings while Dimitrov has had a really difficult 2018, and despite still ranking in the world’s top 8, his performances in ATP Tour Masters events have been sketchy leaving him miles off the pace of qualification.
The big three will all be there, though, barring any unforeseen injuries. It’s quite incredible, really, how they’ve all come back to form after looking seemingly finished at one point or other.
Nadal currently tops the rankings despite having only played in 9 tournaments across 2018. Rafa is doing a bit of a Serena Williams this year by giving his body the rest it needs, and it seems to be working wonders too as of the 9 tournaments he did enter, he won five of them.
In fact, the big three have played in the least tournaments this year yet they still hold the top three positions in the rankings. Federer has only played in one tournament more than Nadal this year and won three of them including a super-impressive Australian Open victory. Djokovic has played in four more and has won four tournaments including the final two majors of the year in Wimbledon and the US Open.
The other five places are made by the dazzlingly-brilliant 21-year-old Alexander Zverev, Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic, Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson, French Open finalist Dominic Thiem and the diminutive Kei Nishikori – US Open finalist Juan Martin del Potro would be there were it not for injury.
Novak Djokovic is the pre-tournament favourite, but it’ll be hard to look beyond Nadal or Federer once the tournament starts.
And as always, it’s sure to be a quite-brilliant tournament.
