Football, footy, Australian Rules, whatever you like to call it, Aussie Rules is Australia’s most-watched sport, and is also home to the highest attended club championship event in the world.
Yep, that’s right. Forget your Super Bowl, forget your FA Cup Final, forget your Champions League final, forget everything else. No club sporting event in the world is attended by over 100,000 every single year like the AFL Grand Final!
Ever since the 1960’s, the AFL Grand Final has become a real integral part of Australian culture, though up until 1990, Aussie Rules was only played professionally in Victoria and Sydney.
However by that time, the game had outgrown the state and to reflect its national composition, the league was changed from the Victoria Football League to the Australian Football League and introduced teams from South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. Nearly three decades on, there are now teams in the Northern Territory, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory too.
Though since the establishment of the Australian Football League, the state of Victoria are still dominant force having won the most titles with 13, while Western Australia are a long way behind with just four titles, Queensland and South Australia have three apiece, and New South Wales have two.
But there have been thirteen different clubs win the AFL Grand Final so far, which shows just how competitive the league is, and it’s actually West Coast from Western Australia together with Hawthorn from Victoria who have been the two most successful sides, though at the turn of the millennium Brisbane Lions from Queensland really bucked the trend by winning three back to back titles, which is the one and only time it’s been done in AFL history, and the first time in AFL / VFL combined history since Melbourne won a trio from 1955 to ’57.
So anyway, enough of the history lesson. Where can you bet on the here and now, and where can you find the best Aussie Rules betting odds?
