And just like that, the first Grand Slam of the year is upon us. No messing about, just straight into the action. Gotta love the Australian Open.
Last year in the men’s draw we saw Roger Federer win his 20th grand slam title in a 5-set thriller with Maran Cilic, while in the women’s Caroline Wozniacki secured her first ever Grand Slam with a 3-set victory over Simona Halep.
In the Australian Open betting odds, Caroline Wozniacki is as high as 18/1 to retain her title with some bookmakers while Roger Federer is second favourite at 5/1 to retain his, behind, of course, the imperious Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic has lost just three matches since winning Wimbledon in June collecting the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open, and the Shanghai Masters in the process. The Serb is no doubt back to his best after a couple of years in the wilderness, and it’s going to take something monumental from Federer, Nadal (6/1), Zverev (9/1), or anyone else to stop him.
In the women’s, it’s Serena who’s the one to beat despite not having tasted victory since giving birth in September 2017. However, she did get to the final last time out at the US Open, and she’s still a level above the rest when on form, even at the age of 37. Her opponent from that controversial and memorable US Open final, Naomi Osaka, is the woman who’s second favourite behind Serena at 8/1, then it’s Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, and Elina Svitolina with the bookmakers having little to choose between the trio.
The women’s side of the draw is usually the one that springs the most surprises, but with the ‘big three’ men all ageing, they aren’t quite the indestructible force that they once were and that’s why this year’s Australian Open is as wide open as perhaps it ever has been, on the men’s and women’s side.
