The bookmakers offering the best Cheltenham Festival betting odds

The best in British and Irish horse racing are ready. It’s time, again, for Cheltenham.

Though the Grand National receives more widespread and mainstream coverage, it’s Cheltenham Festival which truly gets the heart whirring for many a racing fan. Across the four days over 250,000 people descend upon Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire every year ready to taste the action. And what wonderful action they have to look forward to. Here’s the week’s Grade 1 schedule…

Tuesday

  • Supreme Novices’ Hurdle
  • Arkle Challenge Trophy
  • Champion Hurdle
  • David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle

Wednesday

  • Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle
  • RSA Chase
  • Queen Mother Champion Chase
  • Champion Bumper

Thursday

  • Golden Miller Novices’ Chase
  • Festival Trophy
  • Stayers’ Hurdle

Friday

  • Triumph Hurdle
  • Spa Novices’ Hurdle
  • Cheltenham Gold Cup

It’s the Cheltenham Gold Cup which receives the most scrutiny and has the most prestige. In fact, it’s actually the most valuable of all the National Hunt events and the most valuable non-handicap chase in Britain too.

The total prize fund for the race is over £500,000, which is about half that of the Grand National, but at Cheltenham jockeys and trainers compete in multiple events over the week – Ruby Walsh has won seven races on two occasions while Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins have both trained eight winners over the four day period.

In terms of the meeting, day one and day two will be run on the Old Course while day three and day four will be run on the New Course, as is customary. The old course puts the emphasis more on speed whereas the new course is more a test of stamina.

There’s also loads more Grade 2, Grade 3, Listed and Ungraded races over the four days too, so make sure you set yourself a budget so you don’t get carried away. And, of course, please never bet more than you can afford. It’s supposed to be a fun week, not a miserable one!
