It’s the year of Eurovision 64, ladies and gents! Israel are your hosts this year after Netta’s magnificent victory last time out, making them the 16th different winner in the last 18 years.
Indeed, it’s only Sweden and Ukraine who have won the competition twice in that whole time, which is quite startling when one of the criticisms for Eurovision is that the country’s of Europe only vote for their pals. Maybe that isn’t true after all?
Even if it were true, Eurovision have tried to put a stop to that anyway by changing the whole voting system to include an independent panel who are now responsible for half of the full points total. I guess this does make it a little fairer, but it does take a bit of the razzamatazz and the comedy out of it a bit.
It also makes it a little harder to bet on too. Before you could always guarantee that the former Soviet and the Scandinavian nations would do well, and between 2008 and 2016 that was very much the trend with only Germany and Austria breaking the stranglehold, however the last two years have been won by Israel, for the first time since 1998, and Portugal, for the first time ever, which shows that maybe there is something to the new system?
Though, having said all that, since the 50/50 system was introduced back in 2009, only on four occasions have the jurors and voters disagreed – in 2011 with Azerbaijan, in 2015 with Sweden, in 2016 with Ukraine, and last year with Israel.
So what do you go for? Stick with the tried and tested, Latvia, Estonia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and the like? Or go for the ‘new wave’, France, Spain, Portugal, or even the UK? The UK haven’t been close since they finished runners-up as hosts in 1998, surely they’re due another win sometime soon? Or maybe the whole of Europe hates them now after everything that’s happened with Brexit? Who knows?
Anyway, in the table below are all the bookmakers offering you Eurovision betting odds.
Enjoy!
