The second Grand Slam of the year, Roland Garros, the French Open, Rafael Nadal’s tournament.
Well, it’s not actually Rafa’s tournament, but he’s won more singles titles any other tennis player, male or female. Four times more in fact. Martina Navratilova has also won eleven titles too, but 9 of those came in the double’s game, and we all know doubles is nowhere near as important as singles. Soz, Martina.
Rafa’s dominance has been utterly incredible, and his ability to tread the boards of the clay court is unmatched by any man, woman or beast in history. Indeed, nobody has ever dominated a surface like Rafa has with clay. Rafa is to clay what Jimi Hendrix is to guitar. Or Serena is to women’s tennis in general.
Speaking of women’s tennis, the women’s French Open, by contrast, has never solely been controlled by one player. Monica Seles and Justine Henin both won the title three years in a row during the 90’s and 2000’s respectively, and Chris Evert won seven titles across her career, but it’s still a long way off Rafa’s record. Even Serena was never able to master the clay, only winning three of her 23 Grand Slams singles titles at Roland Garros.
Ultimately, clay is a very different game to the hard and grass courts. It’s much slower, much more deliberate, and a lot harder to hit winners. It favours the defensive player, like Rafa, and impedes the attacking player, like Serena and Roger Federer, who has just one French title to his name.
But as a result of the slowness, it makes for longer rallies, and in my humble opinion, better rallies, or at least more intriguing rallies. Whereas grass court tennis is perfect for the big hitter and the big server, clay is more for the methodical, the tactician and results in long, convoluted battles.
And is therefore perfect for the methodical gambler! So where can you find the best bookmakers offering French Open betting odds?
