On the other end of the table sits a few impressive long shots that would stand a good chance of winning on any normal race day, like:
But as we know, the Kentucky Derby is far from a normal day at the races.
Simply put, the Kentucky Derby is the biggest and most well-known horse race in the world. Yep, I’m sorry Grand National lovers, bigger than that too.
Indeed, if you ask a lot of non-horse racing fans if they’ve ever heard of the Kentucky Derby they’d probably say yes and have no idea what it actually is, that’s how much it’s transcended the sport. Colonel Meriweather Lewis Clark Jr.’s creation has turned into a behemoth since its birth in 1875.
150 years on from its inaugural event, The Kentucky Derby has been run every single year since, including war years, and now attracts crowds of over 150,000 to Churchill Downs in Louisville, while over $200m is reported to be wagered on the day’s programme.
The winning horses usually hail from the state of Kentucky, though there have been winners from most other states, and even one from England when Tomy Lee was the victor in 1959. The winning jockeys are also more often than not American too and you’ll have to go back to 2003 to find one that wasn’t – Jose A. Santos from Chile. The last European to win it was the Frenchman Jean Cruget much further back in 1977. The trainers, as you’d expect with predominantly US horses, are almost always American as well.
So to say it’s such a global event, it’s very US-centric at its heart, but obviously that doesn’t make it any less exhilarating to watch. The slogan for the race is, ‘The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports‘, and though that sounds like the start of a slightly crude wedding joke, it’s probably pretty nailed on.
So where can you find all of the bookmakers offering the best Kentucky Derby betting odds then, we hear you scream?
Well right in that little table below these words!
Have fun!
