It’s almost time for one of the horse racing events of the year, the second most prestigious chase in England; the King George VI Chase!
Hosted at Kempton Park in Sunbury, the race was named after the reigning British monarch of the time in 1937, and in the 80 years since it has only not been held in 6 peacetime years, all of which were all cancelled due to frost and snow.
I suppose it is a kind of crazy time to host such a huge horse racing event, right in the middle of winter when there’s such potential that it could get called off. Indeed, the 2010 race had to take place on January 11th after the Boxing Day meet was cancelled due to snow.
But hey, there is nothing better than Boxing Day racing to accompany you while you lounge around in front of the TV, drinking red wine and eating turkey sandwiches all day. Boxing Day football and Boxing Day racing is one of the best things about the Christmas period.
To be honest, I actually prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day. Christmas Day you actually have to do stuff you don’t actually want to do, like sit with your family for basically all day and make loads and loads of food and wash loads and loads of pots and watch absolutely no sport at all.
Maybe I’m a little bit of a Scrooge and, to be fair, Christmas Day ain’t all that bad at all, but it is, without doubt, the worst day of the festive period.
There was a time a few years ago actually when the incumbent Labour government floated the idea of racing on Christmas Day, but it was met with fierce opposition from everyone across the racing spectrum from bookmakers to trainers, from pundits to jockeys.
I guess it is important to have at least one day off a year, I suppose. But after that one day off, it is lovely to have the King George VI Chase waiting for you on Boxing Day afternoon!
