Is there a more in-vogue sport in Britain right now than netball? After securing gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in uber-dramatic fashion, English netball has never been in a place like this before.
At the end of 2018, after their incredible year, the England netball team secured Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year and Team of the Year at the 2018 Sports Personality of the Year awards, and since 2016 the domestic English league the Netball Superleague has been televised live on a weekly basis by Sky Sports. Meanwhile, England games are almost always broadcast live on TV too, with both Sky Sports and BBC sharing the load during the Netball World Cup, the Quad Series, The Commonwealth Games, and international friendlies.
But as of yet, though, netball is yet to make it into the Olympics, and that is probably down to the fact that, a little bit like cricket, netball isn’t played by all that many countries around the world and is dominated, like bandy and floorball, by a select few.
Indeed, since the inaugural Netball World Cup in 1963, only twice has someone other than Australia and New Zealand been able to break the duopoly – England in 1975 and South Africa in 1995, though Trinidad & Tobago also shared the gold with Australia and New Zealand in ’79 and a silver medal with Australia in ’87.
Unfortunately, though, Trinidad have really gone off the boil since that tournament and have failed again and again to replicate that kind of form, failing to finish higher than 6th in the seven tournaments since.
These days it’s still Australia and New Zealand who lead the way, though England and South Africa are quickly closing the gap, while Jamaica are always a threat having never finished lower than fourth at the last five tournaments.
And when it comes to domestic leagues it’s Australia who rule the roost. Until 2016, both Australia and New Zealand used to compete in the same tournament, the ANZ Championship, but with the New Zealanders failing to qualify for the Grand Final in the last four years of the competition, both countries decided to go their seperate ways with the Suncorp Super Netball forming in Australia and the ANZ Premiership forming in New Zealand.
The English Superleague, at present, is quite a long way behind their Oceanic counterparts, but with the momentum that English netball currently has, that could all change soon enough.
So where can you find netball betting odds for the Netball Superleague, the Suncorp Super Netball, the ANZ Premiership, the Netball World Cup, and more?
