The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe then, or simply the ‘Arc’ for those of us who struggle with our French tongue is Europe’s most prestigious horse race and the second richest horse race in the world.
Indeed, the winner of the Arc takes home nearly €3m for securing the title which puts it only behind Australia’s The Everest on the horse racing rich list.
But the thing I love most is the slogan, “Ce n’est pas une course, c’est un monument” which translates to, “It’s not a race, it’s a monument“. Arc de Triomphe is a monument in France and the race is called de l’Arc de Triomphe, get it? Get it? You get it, you get it.
But there is a lot of metaphoric merit there too, in fairness. The race itself is nearly 100 years old now after being inaugurated way back in 1920, which doesn’t make it anywhere near the oldest race in France, but it does make it the oldest thoroughbred meeting, and it’s a true showcase of the thoroughbred breeding too with no handicaps, just pure unadulterated racing. A monument in French racing.
Well, not just French racing, worldwide racing. de l’Arc de Triomphe attracts all the greatest horses from around the world to its meet, yet it’s the French boys who usually dominate. 66 times have the French-trained horses been successful at the Arc while Great Britain lag way behind in second place with 15 winners – though British trained Enable ridden by Frankie Dettori has won the past two. Next up it’s Ireland who’ve had 8 winners, then Italy with 6, and Germany with 2.
In terms of leading owners, Khalid ibn Abdullah a member of the House of Saad has 6 winners joint with Marcel Boussac from the 1930’s and 40’s. Leading trainers it’s André Fabre who last had a winner in 2006. Leading jockey, Frankie Dettori, who won the last two and has 6 overall. And most successful horse is shared between Ksar from the 1920’s, Motrico from the 30’s, Corrida also from the 30’s, Tantieme from the 50’s, Ribot also from the 50’s, Alleged from the 70’s, Treve from earlier this decade, and Enable who’s claimed the last two.
