Sports Personality of the Year is back for its 65th edition on the 16th December 2018, and this year, for the first time ever, the top 10 contenders will be revealed on the night of the show.
So, yes, that does make it harder for you to bet on in advance, but the top few will still be pretty obvious. Here are the current front-runners:
British sport probably hasn’t ever been as successful as it is right now. Just this year we’ve had another Tour de France winner, we have eight world boxing champions, we have a 5-time F1 world champion, we have a four-time world superbike world champion, we finished second in the multi-sport European Championships, England reached the semi-finals of the football World Cup, a Welshman scored in the Champions League final, England beat India in the 5-match test series, Europe won the Ryder Cup, and we even had a British Superbowl winner.
So how do you choose? Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas is the favourite at the moment, but it’s interesting to note that Chris Froome has never finished in the top 3 despite winning the Tour de France four times, however, Thomas is sure to get a huge proportion of the Welsh vote.
Harry Kane will be up there after his Golden Boot-winning World Cup together with England’s semi-final success, not to mention his excellent Premier League scoring record.
Tyson Fury might be an outside shot. He’s currently hovering around 40/1, but if he beats Wilder in convincing fashion, who knows what could happen. It will be one incredible story after everything he’s been through, that’s for sure.
Then there’s last year’s runner-up Jonathan Rea who this year became the first rider to ever win four successive World Superbike titles. Motorcyclists are passionate people, plus he has the Northern Irish vote so he will definitely be there or thereabouts.
Exciting times to come!
