April, May, June, July. Four months, four major golf tournament, but as always, to kick the year off, it’s The Masters.
If a professional golf player could choose one golf tournament to win it’d probably be this one. Sure, the US Open is great in that it’s such a tough tournament to win while The Open carries the prestige of being the oldest golf tournament in existence, but The Masters has a different kind of lure to it.
First up, it’s the only major that’s played on the same course every year (what a course too), and with that brings an added layer of nostalgia where fans and players alike think back to the great stories of yesteryear. I imagine many from the outside must think some of the players must be used to the conditions of the course by now after playing it so often, but that’s not the way it works, I’m afraid.
Secondly, The Masters has the smallest field of all the majors with less than 100 entering every year, and that includes an invitation to all the former winners of the tournament, though they don’t all take up the offer. Indeed, Jack Nicklaus stopped entering in the tournament at the ripe old age of 65 after failing to make the cut every year after turning 60. Gary Player went on four years longer than Nicklaus, and missed the cut 10 years in a row before finally retiring in 2009.
And finally, that green jacket. Of course, a trophy is a lovely reward for four fine rounds of golf, but what’s better than a limited edition jacket? Sergio Garcia wore his when he went to watch Wimbledon in 2017, and you can’t do that with a trophy can you? Impractical, heavy, and you’d have to buy a spare seat to put it on.
There’s a load more allure too. The fact that the course itself is so exclusive, the fact the winner presents the next champion with a green jacket, and that the first shot is taken by a legend of the game.
