As a minnow of European Football, what do Moldovan fans and teams expect from their European campaigns and what would qualify as a success?

For Sheriff and their fans, qualifying for the Europa League group stages is a success. For all other teams and their fans going through the first round is a success.

How important has Sherrif’s relative success (4 EL group stages) been for Moldovan football?

When they play the league gets more attention. When they had their best performance with 9 points in their Europa League group last season many players from smaller teams joined teams abroad because their scouts started watching more Moldovan football.

How much do the fans and teams look forward to European competition?

It’s a great thing for all clubs and the fans. The level of the league is very low and the fans are happy if they see better players in the European competition. For the clubs and players it’s a great opportunity to show off their talent.

Is funding ever a problem for Moldovan sides in European competition in regards getting to and from away games?

No, most of the teams who qualify for Europe can afford going on training camps abroad as well. I only remember last year Zaria Balti traveling to Poland by bus because they had financial problems this time (they also got relegated that season).

Is a Champions League / Europa League game involving Moldovan side watched by most of the nation?

Compared to the league games there is a big increase of people watching the games, but unfortunately I don’t have any statistics about this

How is the EL viewed in general by Moldovan fans?

For every team in Moldova playing in the European competition, the EL group stage is a big thing. If Sheriff is playing there also fans of other teams/rivals support Sheriff there. But if there is no Moldovan team playing in the EL it’s not viewed that much. Then the fans watch the usual big teams and the Russian teams

Do you think UEFA are doing enough to help the minnows of European football and what can they do to further help them?

More money for the qualification rounds would help a lot. If the big teams in the CL get a little bit less they don’t really care but if you give this money to the smaller teams it would help them a lot.
