The bookmakers offering the best Volleyball betting odds

Originating in Massachusetts at the back end of the 1800’s, volleyball was created by a YMCA PE teacher just 10 miles up the road from where basketball was invented just four years previous.

At the time, the game was seen as something of a mix between basketball and badminton and was to be played by the older members of the YMCA who found basketball a bit too tough going.

Over 100 years later, volleyball is arguably as popular as it’s ever been with an Olympic place, with a quadrennial World Championship, a quadrennial World Cup, a yearly Nations League, and a yearly Challenger’s Cup for the lesser sides at international level in both men’s and women’s, while at club level there’s an annual Club World Championship and annual continental competitions for both men and women.

All the traditional powerhouses in Brazil, Russia, USA, Italy, China, Holland, and Serbia remain strong while in recent times France and especially Poland have really kicked on to disrupt the status quo.

Indeed, Poland won the last two Men’s World Championships in 2014 and 2018, and finished 3rd in 2015’s World Cup. At club level their impressing too; both Asseco Resovia Rzeszow and Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle have made the last four of the Men’s Volleyball Champions League (CEV Champions League) in the last three seasons and at the Club World Championship in 2017 and 2018, Belchatow and Resovia from Poland both made the semi-finals.

But at club level, it’s Italy and Russia who are the current dominant forces with the last seven CEV Champions League’s going the way of Russia, and the three before that going to Italy – the last three runners-up have all been Italian too. Zenit-Kazan are the current side to beat, though in 2018’s Club World Championships they weren’t able to retain their title after being dumped out of the group stages by domestic rivals Fakel Novy Urengoy and Cucine Lube Civitanova of Italy. It’ll be wrong not to speak of the Brazilian sides, though. 2013, 2015 and 2016’s Club World champions all came from Brazil with Sada Cruzeiro taking three titles, while they were also runners-up in 2012 and bronze medalists in 2017.
