Water polo’s one of those few sports, like handball and ice hockey, that is absolutely massive on the continent, yet played by pretty much no one in the UK.
Why is that, I hear you ask. Well, it’s a hard question to answer, really, because the sport was founded in Britain in the late 19th century and dominated by the Brits at the first 4 Olympic Games, yet after 1924 their supremacy fell off the edge of the cliff and they never won a medal again. Hilariously though, they still sit second in the medal table, behind the Brazil of water polo, Hungary.
Hungary qualified for their first Olympic final in 1928 and won their first Olympic gold four years later in 1932, and since then have won 8 more making their by far the most outstanding side in water polo Olympic Games history – 5 more golds than anyone else and 4 more overall medals than everyone else.
However, oddly, all of their medals have come in the men’s game. In the women’s, which has only been going since 2000, it’s the US who lead the way with 2 golds and 5 medals overall.
But water polo has a lot more to it than the Olympics with the World Aquatics Championships every two years, the Water Polo World Championships every four years, the Water Polo World League every year, the bi-annual European Water Polo Championships, plus the quadrennial Asian Games and Pan American Games.
Then on top of that there is a strong club game, mainly in Europe, where teams play for the coveted LEN Champions League trophy. Teams from Bosnia, Croatia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey typically enter the tournament.
Yugoslavia have won the most titles since the competition’s inception in 1963, while Italy have are now just one behind on 13. Indeed, since the fall of Yugoslavia in 1992, the Italians have won 9 titles, 1 more than their nearest competitor in Croatia, 6 more than Hungary, 7 more than Greece, Serbia and Spain, and 8 more than Montenegro.
So having said all that, where can you find Water Polo betting odds for the LEN Champions League, World Aquatics Championships, the Water Polo World Championships, the Water Polo World League, European Water Polo Championships, and more?
