Your Full In-Depth 2019 African Cup of Nations Preview

If it’s true that there’s no such thing as bad publicity, then the pre-AFCON scenes put it to a serious test.

First, there was a malfunctioning VAR that could not review an obvious offside goal in the return Champions League final, so Wydad Casablanca, the harmed party, walked out on the game even though they didn’t really have a case. Then the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided to not only replay the match, but do so on a neutral ground, because of course it was a fault of the host, Espérance de Tunis, and not the organizer of the competition. Finally, the same CAF just proceeded to fold completely as it saw its website hacked with hundreds of journalist passports leaked, while its shady president Ahmad was getting detained in Paris.

Look, we all kind of enjoy all the quirks and sass of African football, but this was a bit too much still.

Yet, against the backdrop of all the drama, the 32nd edition of edition of Africa Cup of Nations seems to be going ahead regardless, and so only half a year after the biggest continent’s showpiece competition was expanded to 24 teams, the second biggest continent will also get to experience extended carnival.

The 2019 Asian Cup offered some significant underdog success stories, so can the 2019 Afcon follow suit?
